Fabrication of a Steel Sump Tank for the Coal Mining Industry

A customer in the coal mining industry asked West Kentucky Steel to craft a steel sump tank for its coal mining preparation plant. Working from the customer's prints, we were able to deliver an 8,500 gallon flanged tank measuring 20 feet high, 17 feet in diameter, and graded from 4 feet at the bottom to 17 feet at the top. The tank was made of 3/8" A36 mild steel, coated with epoxy and lined with 1" stone harden.

This 12,000 lb sump tank includes an access door for inspection purposes. The plasma cut pieces were formed on a press brake. The tank was flanged to be bolted on-site for ease of assembly. Tightest tolerances were to ±1/16".
